IPAC Concerns at a Childcare Centre

Some of the toughest exam questions come from everyday situations.  Where you know something’s wrong, but have to clearly explain what it is, why it matters, and what to do about it.

This scenario takes place during a routine childcare inspection. There are four questions and a total of 21 possible points, so don’t stop at the obvious.  Say every relevant point you can think of.  Practice answering out loud, and aim to get through the whole thing in 5–6 minutes, including reading time.

Infection Prevention and Control – 4 Questions

You are conducting an inspection of a licensed childcare centre and you observe a staff member finish changing a diaper, remove their gloves, and proceed to place cookies on a tray for snack time without washing their hands.  In one of the playrooms, you observe a sensory bin with cooked pasta and two children are having fun squishing it with their hands.

Questions:

  2. What is the proper procedure that staff should follow when changing diapers in a childcare setting?

  3. What concerns do you have about the sensory bin?

  4. What actions would you take during your inspection to address these issues?
